MEET DR. SHARON JONES, OUR FOUNDER

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?

Sharon was great about letting me know of opportunities my daughter might enjoy after she attended her first Dottie Rose event. The organization does a great job of helping their students feel comfortable while learning and having fun! The ice cream outting downtown was also a hit!

Parent

My daughter had an awesome experience at the Dottie Rose summer camp! She had an opportunity to learn about theatre at UNC Charlotte in a class taught by college professors. She also had an opportunity to learn about robotics and coding.

Parent

My experience with Dottie Rose foundation has been amazing. I get to learn new things and do a lot of things that I didn’t think I would do, but the dottie rose has really made me think about trying new things because ever since the first time I went, they have been telling me about other events and since I had so much fun the first time I agreed so I have been coming back ever since my first time with the Dottie Rose foundation.

Parent

Thank you so much! The girls had a blast and we are going to try to get them plugged into the camp this summer. Anytime I have all 3 girls sharing how fun something was and how much they learned we don’t have much feedback.

Parent

DRF has opened both of my daughter’s eyes to all the possibilities computer science and technology has to offer – all while having a blast! I am so grateful for all the camps and events DRF puts on that introduces such a fun, new world to these girls.

Parent

Both of my daughters have attended different events and both were wanting to know when the next event was taking place.

Parent

My daughter was done with coding. she felt like she had no more interest. Luckily her aunt signed her up and she was so elated. She enjoyed the classes and doing something different with her coding skills.

Team Member Spotlight: Program Specialist, Chasity Spruill

With a rich background in both technology and education, Chasity brings a unique blend of skills and experience to the role of Upper Elementary/Middle School Education Program Manager. Chasity holds a BS in Computer Science from NC A&T State University, with further credentials in IT Operations and Quality Assurance from Goodwill University and Central Piedmont Community College. This blend of technical expertise and educational insight is the cornerstone of her approach to managing educational programs.

Before transitioning into this role, Chasity accumulated diverse experience in the tech industry, working as a Programmer Analyst at Cognizant Technology Solutions and as a Business Analyst at Ally Financial. Her hands-on involvement in developing applications and creating project artifacts has honed her skills in project management and team collaboration.

However, it’s Chasity’s previous tenure as a Business Education Teacher with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools that truly defines her passion and dedication to education. As a PLC Lead for the Game Art Design and Software Development pathway and a beginning teacher mentor, she demonstrated a commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a collaborative learning environment.

In her role as Upper Elementary/Middle School Education Program Manager, Chasity is excited to leverage her background in technology and education to create innovative and engaging programs that support both students and educators. She is dedicated to building inclusive, dynamic learning experiences that inspire curiosity and academic growth.

With the weekend here, have you ever gone to the movies at home?! While watching a movie with your family is a nice time to wind down and relax together, consider making it a little more memorable every once in awhile! There are so many easy ways to do this…create paper tickets, individual popcorns, plop the couch pillows on the floor for a more “up-close” experience, the possibilities are endless! Have fun!

Today was the kickoff for our Tech Teddies Workshop powered by @brighthousefinancial!

The making of a teddy bear is an algorithm in action. Students design, plan, and make their teddy bear. Before the students can begin to make their teddy bear, they must first design. This involves conceptualizing the animal’s appearance, shape, and features. Similarly, the same process happens in computer science when designing a software program or application. Once students design their teddy bear, they will walk through the algorithm (the step by step process) of making their teddy bear. Then once the bear is made, they will have options (variables) to accessorize the teddy bear to make it their own. The real world experience of seeing an algorithm in action creates relevance for students. And today, these students were able to do just that!

Thank you to the 90 Brighthouse Financial volunteers and to the 160 kiddos that attended! The entire 5th grade class at Governors Village Stem Academy was able to attend. A great workshop filled with fun, creativity, and learning!
